Skateboarding offers thrills and excitement—aficionados are the first to admit there is nothing in the world quite like mastering a jump or a different trick for the first time. Skateboarding tricks embody the realization of a goal, the result of weeks—if not months—of diligent, sometimes frustrating practice. However, while the real thing is great, fans can quench their thirst for all things skateboarding through skateboarding videos and video games.

It has never been easier to find a plethora of video games or DVDs with skateboarding themes than with the help of the Internet and skate shops continually stocking all sorts of products and memorabilia.

Skating fans can choose between all sorts of videos, from documentary-style footage to stunts and tricks reels. As Steve Cave notes in his article, “Top 10 Skate Videos,” there are so many videos available to the general public consumers can sometimes have trouble deciding which ones are worthwhile. However, some stand out in terms of quality.

For example, DC Shoe Co. U.S.A. has marketed “The DC Video,” arguably one of the best skate videos available today. Among other things, the video highlights skater Danny Way breaking two world records. Fans also can enjoy the variety of special features available, including music and a full color book.

Another highly-recommended skateboarding video is “Planes, Trains & Skateboards,” which follows the World Cup Skateboarding circuit throughout 2004. This video stands apart from others since it has documentary-like qualities.

So what is with the fascination with skateboarding videos? Skateboarding videos are popular, in part, because they tend to showcase industry professionals at their best. They offer amateur skateboarders inspiration. Fans are awe-inspired with the realization of what they, too, can achieve with enough practice and dedication.

As far as games are concerned, the video game market has taken the sport as an opportunity to develop a niche market. In discussing skateboarding video games, one in particular merits mentioning as a milestone.

In September 1999, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater was released for the Sony PlayStation, marking the arrival of the first, high-quality 3-D skateboarding simulation. The game was a success almost immediately as gamers took part in the first game truly capturing the pure grit and radical feel of skateboarding. Realistic graphics helped contribute to a believable experience. Interestingly, even many non-skaters play skateboarding video games, spending hours trying to perfect their virtual moves.

Once a hobby practiced and perfected by young men and women, the skateboarding industry has blossomed into a marketable and lucrative franchise.
