Indoor skateparks are a great option for skaters who don't want to face the outdoor elements. In the past, skaters used to rely on the courses they would find on the streets—railings, stairs, benches, ledges and curbs. Then, outdoor skateparks began to pop up in cities around the world—concrete courses featuring pipes and ramps.
This gave skaters a place to be and helped alleviate some of the property damage caused by skating. As skating and other extreme sports began to gain popularity, indoor skateparks began sprouting up. Skating is now a year-round sport that can be enjoyed regardless of weather, thanks to indoor skateparks.
The United States is home to several indoor skateparks, except for the states of Nebraska, Utah, and Indiana. In Illinois, one of the best indoor skateparks is Krush Skatepark of Tinley Park. Its motto is, “Built by skaters, owned by skaters, run by skaters.” The skaters who visit this park certainly enjoy it and it's no surprise why. The 20,000 square-foot park features a 5-6 ft. bowl, plus stairs, banks, hubbas, quarterpipes, hips, rails, boxes, and pads. Their 7-day schedule has different sessions for various ages and skill level, so be sure to check it out before showing up. Bikers are welcome on Mondays and Thursdays (not in the bowl, though).
Krush also offers special events, summer camps, and private lessons. Devoted skaters can rent out the park ($200/hr) or the mezzanine party room ($100/hr) to celebrate or just for some private time with their crew. Helmets and signed liability forms are mandatory for all skaters. All this fun comes at a price, though. A $75 annual membership decreases the normal session rate from $10 a session to just $6. Wednesdays are usually half-price, but check the schedule at their website Krushskatepark.com.
In Canada, one of the most well-known indoor skateparks is the LBC ( Lonsdale Board Company ) in Vancouver. Established in 2003, LBC features some fun elements in addition to exciting skating. For example, LBC has entertaining live music shows and movie premieres at the park. They also host contest and private parties. For skating gear, skaters can check out their pro-shop.
The UK also has some great indoor skateparks. One of the best indoor skateparks is Rampworx. At 48,000 square-feet it is the largest in the UK. It offers skaters vert ramps, drive ways, spine ramps, and jump boxes. Besides its awesome courses, Rampworx is recognized because of Dave Arnold, the well-known ramp builder who built Rampworx. Like most other indoor skateparks, Rampworx requires helmets and a signed consent form. It is a non-smoking park, and is closed on Mondays. Dedicated skaters can sign up for coaching sessions or other special packages by visiting Rampworx.com.
In Australia, outdoor skateparks are the most popular because of the beautiful weather in Australia. There are quite a few indoor skateparks, though. For example, the Slam Factory is popular for skaters, rollerbladers, and BMXers alike. This laidback park doesn't require pads or helmets and can get quite crowded on the weekends. Slam Factory features pipes, ramps, and a street course, as well as their own pro shop.
As skating continues to increase in popularity, indoor skateparks are bound to grow around the world. However, even though indoor skateparks are convenient and thrilling, skaters will never outgrow the fun of skating wherever they can outdoors, and for free.
